Lyrics to `The Pilot Gig` by Six Sick Sheep

Verse 1

Sitting in the Smugglers Bar at 6 o`clock,

You`ll find several generations of Cornish stock,

The warm fire crackles in the flickering candle light

Rain is pouring down another gale tonight

Chorus

They`ve not been paid for over seven days

And they won`t get paid if they do not win the race

Verse 2

Their pilot gig is finely built of Cornish elm,

Captain Trevorrow always sitting at its helm

His brothers and his friends they all will take an oar

They know just how to get that ship back to the shore

Chorus

They`ve not been paid for over seven days

And they won`t get paid if they do not win the race

Lead

Verse 3

In the Royal Oak you`ll find Trethewy`s men

Just as hungry for some work and to launch again....

They know the Cornish coast when it is at its worst

They hope they find the strength to get there first

Chorus

They`ve not been paid for over seven days

And they won`t get paid if they do not win the race

Verse 4

A shout goes up there is a Spanish ship off shore

`Neck your beers let`s run and go and grab the oars`

It`s so dark and in the rain stumbling about

Trevorrow takes a fall and puts his shoulder out

Chorus

They`ve not been paid for over seven days

And they won`t get paid if they do not win the race

All the crews!

Pull...........heave

Pull...........heave

Pull...........heave

Pull...........heave

Chorus

They`ve not been paid for over seven days

And they won`t get paid if they do not win the race

Verse 5

The six foot waves break over them there`s water coming in

The gig sends men into the air their spine slams down again

And Trevorrow`s he`s in agony they`re rowing one man down

There`s no way they can beat the Oak they`re losing too much ground

Chorus

They`ve not been paid for seven days and they won`t get paid tonight

They`ve not been paid for seven days and they won`t get paid tonight

They`ve not been paid for seven days and they won`t.... get... paid ...tonight

Album notes

Track One `The Pilot Gig`

The Cornish pilot gig is a rowing boat with six oars built of Cornish narrow leaf elm.  As long ago as the 17th century it was one of the first shore-based lifeboats that went to vessels in distress although it was typically used for taking pilots out to incoming vessels off the Atlantic. Back in the day there was often a race for the first gig to get their pilot on board a vessel before it ran aground on rocks.  Whoever got there first got paid.  Gig racing is a thriving sport today and this song was written following a trip to one such event in Salcombe, Devon.

Track Two `Rolling Home to You`

This a traditional folk/drinking song which describes those many relationships which start in a somewhat beer fuelled haze but end up in unbreakable life-long commitment.  Enough

Track Three `Ain`t Enough Cooking Shows on TV`

Everywhere you look there are TV shows about food and how you should exact the last ounce of flavour from some exotic dish.  Given the numbers of starving people in the world, does this really sit comfortably with you?   `Ain`t enough cooking shows on TV` addresses this subject with more than a hint of irony.
